The 45.22-tesla magnet sits just shy of the record for the world’s most powerful magnet.
China reportedly launched the world’s strongest magnet for research purposes at a laboratory in the southeastern town of Hefei, which is in the Anhui province, a statement from the South China Morning Post (SCMP) discloses.
The magnet is said to be roughly the size of a coin, with a diameter of just 33mm. Regardless of its moderate size, it creates a consistent magnetic field strength of 45.22 tesla, which is greater than a million times more powerful than the Earth’s magnetic field.
World Record Breaking Magnets
Researchers from the United States National High Magnetic Field Laboratory constructed a world record-breaking 45.5-tesla field in 2019. That being said, these experts did that just with a test magnet that wasn’t used for scientific experiments.
The Hefei center has now become the highest steady-state magnetic field that can assist scientific research.
The original record was made by the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in the US in 1999. Its hybrid magnet generated 450,000 gauss [45 tesla], and it has kept the record for twenty-three years.
Producing such powerful magnetic fields necessitates an incredible load of energy, although the rewards might also be world-changing. Scientists around the world are producing exceptionally powerful magnets in a bid to use the great capability of nuclear fusion power, which could decrease the entire world’s dependence on nonrenewable energies.
At the Heifei facility, a team of physicists made use of a powerful magnet back in the year 2016 to carry out experiments, which in turn led to the observance of an all-new physical phenomenon in carbon nanotubes. Their discovery has potential uses in the semiconductor sector, as research workers are attempting to substitute silicon with carbon in processors to create super-fast low-power computers.
Unlocking nuclear fusion and many other advancements
Professor Kuang Guangli, the lead physicist on the project revealed that his team has effectively developed the strongest magnet around the world for scientific research.
While the country’s strong magnetic field lab launched relatively late, it merely took about ten years to make the big jump from zero to an innovator, creating the China speed for the innovation of strong magnetic modern technology the report said.
